Sun & Sun Protection - Sol & Protección Solar

Oh, the sun. There is no life on Earth without it. It is a natural source of vitamin D and it boosts the levels of the "happiness hormone" (serotonin). BUT the sun also has its dark and toxic side. Its UV (ultraviolet) radiation can be harmful, dangerous, and destructive for us humans. They damage our skin and our health.

  • UVA (Ultraviolet A) rays forms 95% of the UV radiation that reaches Earth. They penetrate deeply into our skin and damage the epidermis and dermis. They cause almost all forms of skin aging, including wrinkles. They damage collagen and elastin in the skin, generate free radicals, and play a role in some skin cancers.
  • UVB (Ultraviolet B) rays form only 5% of the sun's UV radiation, but they have very high energy. They don't penetrate as deeply as UVA rays, but they can wreak havoc on the top layers of our skin. They are main cause of sunburn. They damage skin cells and causes DNA mutations that can eventually lead to melanoma and other types of skin cancer. They can also cause cataracts.

How scary those rays are, right? One might lose the desire to go outside, to sunbathe… But we don't need to lock ourselves indoors to stay safe from them. We simply need to take care of ourselves and use the protection tools we have. We can protect our eyes by wearing sunglasses with UV400 protection, and we can protect our skin and our health by using sunscreen with the highest SPF available on the market. The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor), the longer the protection will last.

Sun protection is very important to me because when I don't apply sunscreen during the hot months, I get eczema, and because my skin is also more prone to sunburn than tanning. Also, because I want to avoid dark spots and wrinkles.
So, I apply sunscreen with SPF 50+ every time I go out, whether it’s sunny or not. I put it on about 20 minutes before going outside or sunbathing so it has time to absorb into my skin.

And when I sunbathe, which is pretty rare, I only do it for 20–30 minutes with sunscreen properly applied. (A sunscreen with high SPF will not prevent you from tanning; on the contrary, it helps you tan safely without damaging your skin.) I also wear a hat firmly placed on my head. That way, I avoid several things: headaches from sun exposure, hair dehydration, and unnecessary stress on my face.

I make sure to drink plenty of water, lemonade, or natural juice. (Fruit juices are a great source of vitamins and an excellent way to refresh yourself.) This way, I take care of myself inside and out. And after a session in the sun, I enjoy a nice relaxing shower and apply a good after-sun cream that leaves my skin feeling perfect.

These safety measures are very helpful, but they are not all-powerful. The best protection against UV radiation is staying out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when UVB rays are at their highest intensity.

And one of the best beauty tips I got and I can give is: try to keep out of the sun.

Procuro beber mucha agua, limonada o algún zumo natural.
